My submission to the Manifest 2007 mascot competition - I swear, I do intend to draw for purposes other than Manifest, honest! ^^;

The original character design isn't mine (which is partly why I've put it under the 'fanart' category), though I've given the design quite a bit of revamping- frankly, I was fed up with otaku/anime culture with its big eyes, small mouth, innocent kawaii shoujo image that stands there in a pastel-pink short skirt, batting her eyelashes and smiling for the boys. :P With that in mind, I tried to create a version of the mascot that was more assertive and less passive; this was difficult given the design constraints, and I admit that I'm not even sure I succeeded in that respect. In the end this also didn't win... read into that what you will. :X

On the plus side, I had an absolute ball drawing in non-pseudo-realistic proportions! I usually get stressed out drawing 'seriously', so it was good being able to relax and just concentrate on having fun with this.

<font face="courier new">Totally agree on the "innocent kawaii shoujo image" front; there's a lot of samebutdifferentbutreallythesame going on. I think that's part of the reason i've picked up western comics.

I like your version! she looks cheeky :3

YES, THANK YOU!! Glad to know I'm not the only one! (Then again, I think "mascot" by definition means innocent-kawaii-shoujo, so what can you do? :S)
(I'd personally like to think she'd step all over you in her killer boots if you misbehaved. >:D)

Heh, isn't it a pain to reset your font to courier all the time? ;)

Oh, it's so cool!!! AND I can just picture what type of image DID win, some girly - shoujo massive-eyes piece of...*cough* well, you know as well as I do...
I'm very fed up with those type of character designs, so it would have been awesome to have had something as cool as this on all the cards and stuff XD

one time i posted something anonymously in a friend's lj and she was all "omg kath i know it's you, you used courier" and i looked like a tool XD

*laugh* All I'll say on that matter is that if you go to the website, you'll see... (on that matter, looking at the new website layout I'm convinced that Manifest is run by a bunch of people with no taste. XD)

I guess I'm more out of touch with mainstream anime culture than I realised (great, I'm a minority within a minority :P); I tend to hang around artists, so I forget that most people actually like the big eyed, pastel shoujo look- though I s'pose what I've done isn't revolutionary, but still. Personally, I think it's their loss (woah, look at that arrogance!), but thanks anyway. ;)

*laugh* Oh no, you'd be so easy to frame - someone could post abusive in courier, and people would automatically think it was you! :O
